HOLIDAYS IN HAMBURG

Excursion destinations for a week or more

A holiday in Hamburg offers so much more than just a city break. With a little more time, you can discover the city's hidden gems, such as quiet beaches on the Elbe, historic old towns in the surrounding area, large green spaces, rural regions and coastal towns that can be quickly reached by train. From the central SIDE Design Hotel, it's easy to plan many of these excursions, which is ideal for anyone staying in Hamburg for a week or longer and wanting to make their stay varied.

Discover Hamburg – excursions to water, nature and special neighbourhoods

Sandy beach on the Elbe with waterfront seating

Övelgönne & Elbstrand – small beaches in the middle of the city

A walk along the Elbe will take you directly to Övelgönne. There, you will find small city beaches where you can watch big ships passing just metres from the shore. The old captains’ houses and quiet alleys give the neighbourhood a special atmosphere. It’s ideal for spending beautiful days by the water, either barefoot in the sand or with a coffee in your hand.

Green staircase in the Treppenviertel of Hamburg-Blankenese

Blankenese & Treppenviertel – Hamburg's hillside

With its narrow paths and steep steps, Blankenese has an almost Mediterranean feel. Winding staircases and hidden passageways lead to small vantage points overlooking the Elbe. If you have time, continue along the beach path or take the ferry to Cranz for a pleasant change of scenery.

Hamburg Planetarium in the Stadtpark beyond a green lawn

Stadtpark & Planetarium – green space and star show

The Stadtpark has wide meadows and old trees, providing plenty of space for relaxing afternoons. Picnics, reading and short walks are all wonderful ways to spend your leisure time here. The Planetarium is one of the most modern in Europe and puts on impressive star shows, providing a peaceful and atmospheric end to long days.

Historic brick buildings and boats by the water in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg

Wilhelmsburg – urban gardens & views

Wilhelmsburg is an island with a green touch, boasting an island park, small lakes, modern sports areas and many quiet paths. The Energieberg, an artificially created vantage point with sweeping views over the harbour and the Elbe landscape, is particularly worthwhile.

Day trips from Hamburg – cities, coastlines & nature reserves

Historic Holsten Gate in Lübeck

Lübeck – UNESCO old town & brick romanticism

Lübeck can be reached in less than an hour by train or car. The old town island boasts narrow streets, courtyards and the famous Holstentor gate, as well as several museums. If you want to breathe in some sea air, continue on to Travemünde, where you can enjoy a Baltic Sea beach.

Horse-drawn carriage crossing the tidal flats near Cuxhaven

Nordseeküste & Cuxhaven – fresh air and mudflats

Cuxhaven combines coastline, dykes and open spaces. From the beach, you can see large ships sailing to and from Hamburg and the North Sea. The mudflats are particularly suitable for quiet, barefoot walks in the wind and are refreshing.

Flowering Lüneburg Heath with juniper bushes in warm evening light

Lüneburg Heath – gentle landscapes, car-free paths

The Lüneburg Heath is a stark contrast to the city. Around Undeloh or Wilseder Berg, there are traffic-free paths that are perfect for hiking. When in bloom, the fields turn a deep purple – an impressive sight.

Historic half-timbered and brick houses in Stade

Stade & Buxtehude – old towns & narrow streets

These two Hanseatic cities can be reached quickly by regional train. Half-timbered facades, small squares and quiet old town streets characterise the atmosphere. A pleasant excursion for relaxed, culture-filled days.

Flowering tree and half-timbered houses in the Altes Land

Altes Land – apple orchards & dyke paths

South of the Elbe lies the Altes Land, which is ideal for walks and has cosy farm cafés serving regional produce. There are also cycle paths alongside the orchards and half-timbered houses. The apple blossom in spring and the harvest season in autumn are particularly beautiful.

Nature around Hamburg – lots of greenery, surprisingly close

Sheeps grazing on a green dyke in Hamburg’s Marschlande

Vier- and Marschlande – Hamburg's rural side

Vegetable fields, flower nurseries, small farms and quiet streets make Vier- und Marschlande a relaxing destination for half-day trips. There are many cafés and farm shops that are well worth a visit.

Woodland path through the Harburg Hills in autumn

Harburg Mountains – small hiking trails just outside the city limits

Here, Hamburg briefly becomes hilly, with forests, narrow paths and small viewpoints offering a sporty change of pace. This is ideal for anyone who wants to combine nature and exercise on holiday.

Tips for longer stays

Discover Hamburg without a car

Hamburg can also be easily explored without your own car. Underground and suburban trains, buses and ferries reliably connect the most important districts and sights. Ferry line 62 is particularly popular: with a regular HVV ticket, you can travel from Landungsbrücken down the Elbe to Finkenwerder, offering a relaxed and inexpensive alternative to the classic harbour tour.

Fresh vegetables and pumpkins at a Hamburg market stall

Weekly markets – local products & street food

For regional specialities and quick lunches, Hamburg’s weekly markets, which take place in many districts on different days, are well worth a visit. The traditional Altona Fish Market is particularly well-known, taking place early on Sunday mornings and attracting visitors with its unique Hanseatic atmosphere. The St. Pauli Night Market on Spielbudenplatz combines street food with an after-work atmosphere, making it a popular evening meeting place.

Couple relaxing together in a whirlpool

Make good use of rainy days

Even in bad weather, Hamburg has a lot to offer. Visit the museums on the Art Mile, enjoy interactive exhibitions, or relax in selected saunas and thermal baths to ensure your holiday remains varied, whatever the weather.

The SIDE Design Hotel Hamburg is centrally located enough to allow you to discover Hamburg anew every day, yet quiet enough to unwind in the evening. The Alster, city centre and Art Mile are within easy walking distance. Dammtor railway station is just an 8-minute walk away and provides quick access to the main railway station, allowing you to take trips to nearby cities or beaches. After a long day, the SIDE offers cosy rooms and suites, impressive architecture, and the peace and quiet you'll appreciate on holiday.
